Ontario’s Family Day holiday is on Monday, Feb. 16, so expect changes to opening hours or closures for many businesses, services, and attractions.
This day isn’t a holiday in Quebec and it’s not recognized as a federal holiday.
Here’s what you need to know about closures and schedule changes.

Shopping and attractions
Grocery stores Most grocery stores in Ottawa will be closed on Monday. However, some like Whole Foods at Lansdowne Park, Farm Boy at Rideau Centre, Loblaws on Isabella Street, and Metro on Rideau Street will stay open. Alcohol The Beer Store and LCBO locations will not be open. You might find alcohol at rural LCBO convenience outlets and participating grocery stores that are open Monday. Pharmacies Many pharmacy locations will remain open. It’s best to check with individual stores for their holiday hours. Malls Bayshore, Place d’Orléans, and St. Laurent malls will be closed. Rideau Centre and Tanger Outlets will be open but store hours may differ. Museums and galleries The National Gallery of Canada along with the agriculture, aviation, history, nature, science, and war museums will welcome visitors. The Ottawa Art Gallery and Diefenbunker will not be open. Skating The Rideau Canal Skateway depends on weather conditions. Check its status on the National Capital Commission’s website. When it’s operational, entry is free around the clock. The Rink of Dreams at city hall opens from 9 a. m. to 11 p. m., weather permitting. A Family Day event is scheduled from 10 a. m. until 2 p. m. The Lansdowne Park skating court operates from 8 a. m. until 11 p. m., subject to weather conditions. The Ben Franklin Place skating rink is available from 9 a. m. until 11 p. m., also weather permitting. The Jim Tubman Chevrolet rink runs from 8 a. m. until 10 p. m., depending on the weather. Waste There won’t be curbside green bin recycling or garbage collection today; nor will there be multi-residential recycling or green bin collection. Pickup resumes Tuesday with delays for collections throughout the rest of the week. Multi-residential garbage containers will still be collected normally. Libraries All branches of Ottawa Public Library are closed. Municipal child care All municipal child-care centres are not operating today. Recreation Many recreation facilities are shut down but some spaces might have limited schedules. Ottawa Public HealthThe Site mobile van works from 5 p. m. to11:30 p. m. The Sexual Health Clinic along with satellite clinics won’t be available. Dental clinics are closed too.
