After a calm beginning to the week in southern and eastern Ontario, weather experts are monitoring a strong system moving over the Great Lakes that could bring severe weather to eastern Ontario before reaching Quebec on Thursday.

Stay alert for severe weather alerts throughout Thursday, as conditions will become more unstable with daytime heating.

Storm risks shift into eastern Ontario and Quebec on Thursday

The stormy system is expected to push into eastern Ontario on Thursday, eventually affecting Ottawa and central Quebec, including the Eastern Townships by the afternoon to evening hours.

Eastern Ontario and Quebec Thursday afternoon forecast storms – Aug. 26, 2026

The most favorable conditions for severe weather appear to be east of Montreal, where there should be plenty of moisture in the atmosphere, strong wind shear, and high atmospheric rotation. This could lead to brief supercell thunderstorms, increasing the risk of tornadoes.

The atmosphere is likely to reach its peak instability just before rush hour begins. That means people heading home from work might encounter intense thunderstorms that could delay their commutes.

Keep following The Weather Network for updates and information about your forecast in Ontario.
