Tens of thousands of customers are without power, and four sections of Highway 401 are closed Tuesday morning as strong gusts of blowing snow hit the Ottawa-Gatineau region.
A snow squall warning is in effect for the Outaouais east of Gatineau, along with a wind warning remaining from Monday in southern Prince Edward County, where morning gusts could reach up to 100 km/h.
Areas near the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario might experience gusts around 80 km/h Tuesday morning, according to a special weather statement.
An additional alert for Ottawa and communities from Westport to Hawkesbury warns about morning blasts of snow with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h.
As of 9 a. m., nearly 60,000 local customers were reported without power, according to Hydro One, Ottawa, and Québec. Utilities Kingston has no significant outages reported.
Westbound Highway 401 is shut down due to crashes from Palace Road to Centre Street in the Napanee area, at Gardiners Road in Kingston, and at County Road 2 near Gananoque.
The eastbound side of Highway 401 is closed from Gardiners Road to Camden East Road because Ontario’s transportation ministry (MTO) describes “road conditions” as unsafe.
The MTO indicated that much of Highway 15 and Highway 401 near Kingston are covered in snow with low visibility. Portions of Highways 7 and 416 were also partly covered in snow.
This is the scene from Highway 401 west of Kingston where there have been multiple collisions involving transports. No serious injuries have been reported but the westbound lanes are closed at several locations between Kingston and Napanee. This follows earlier… pic. twitter. com/LBr TZe SNHR
