Making Strides in Ontario
The Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) has achieved the #5 spot in Ontario according to the latest Top Energy-Performing School Boards Report from the Sustainable Schools program.
This year, out of 72 school boards across the province, OCSB climbed two positions. This success reflects years of careful planning, responsible management, and ongoing efforts to lower energy use in our schools and facilities.
Impacting 87 Buildings
Overseeing energy consumption across 87 buildings is quite a challenge. From elementary schools to high schools and administrative offices, each facility contributes to minimizing our environmental impact while providing healthy and comfortable learning environments for both students and staff.
By upgrading lighting, heating and ventilation systems, along with constant monitoring of building performance, the OCSB is making significant strides in enhancing energy efficiency throughout the system.
A Focus on Responsible Management
This recognition highlights all the behind-the-scenes work that takes place daily to ensure our schools run as effectively and responsibly as possible.
“This ranking reflects years of careful planning and a strong commitment to operating our schools in a more sustainable and energy-efficient way,” says Miro Vala, Superintendent of Planning and Facilities. “Our goal is to create learning and working environments that are healthy, comfortable, and built with the future in mind for our students and staff.”
Planning for Tomorrow
Sustainability remains a priority for both new construction projects and renovations across the Board. Through initiatives like Savings by Design, OCSB collaborates with energy experts to integrate eco-friendly design features into new schools and major updates.
<p Projects such as the new Kanata North Catholic Elementary School embody this long-term commitment to sustainability. The implementation of energy-efficient systems alongside modern architectural design helps lessen overall environmental effects.
The Team Behind These Efforts
While technology plays a crucial role, these achievements also rely heavily on those who maintain our schools day after day.
The caretaking and facilities team at OCSB is vital in monitoring building performance, spotting conservation opportunities, and ensuring that schools function efficiently. Their contributions often go unnoticed but significantly influence how well the system operates.
Students Taking Initiative
Environmental awareness thrives within our classrooms and school communities. Schools throughout OCSB engage with Eco Schools Canada programs where students lead efforts focused on waste reduction, promoting environmental awareness, establishing school gardens, and conserving energy.
These initiatives empower students to develop leadership skills while understanding how important it is to care for our environment now and for future generations.
Pursuing Progress
The OCSB continues its dedication towards lowering energy consumption while enhancing efficiency through responsible investments that align with both ecological sustainability goals as well as financial responsibility over time. p >
