Police stopped two reckless drivers in eastern Ontario after they were spotted driving at dangerous speeds.

As reported by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), they noticed an orange car zooming down Highway 401 near Morrisburg. The vehicle was recorded going 239 km/h in a zone where the limit is 110 km/h.

The officer who pulled over the driver heard them say they were rushing home and “regretted speeding.” They received a charge for stunt driving along with an immediate 14-day vehicle impound. Since the driver is from Nova Scotia, their licence was suspended for 30 days in Ontario.

<p On that same day, police also stopped a pick-up truck in the vicinity.

This driver was clocked at 156 km/h and is facing identical stunt driving penalties.

The truck police say was travelling well above the speed limit. (OPP)

Ottawa OPP Implementing Stricter Charges

There have been multiple cases of drivers exceeding limits on Ottawa roads, sometimes catching the same individuals speeding at double the limit.

Due to this trend, OPP Constable Michael Fathi mentioned that police have consulted with Crown attorneys in Ottawa and decided that any speeds over 180 km/h could lead to dangerous driving charges being laid against offenders.

“We’re trying to get the message out to people that you’re not facing just highway traffic charges, but you could now be facing a criminal code charge,” he said.
