Who is Jason Burggraaf?
For seven years, Jason Burggraaf has served as the executive director of the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association. He focuses on making sure that homebuilders’ perspectives are considered as policymakers influence residential construction and development in Ottawa. What is his background?
Originally from Conception Bay South, N. L., Burggraaf relocated to Ottawa to study political science at Carleton University, aiming to become a staff member on Parliament Hill. However, he soon discovered his enthusiasm for public policy. “Policy and development has always been kind of my bread and butter,” he told Capital Current. Prior to joining the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association, Burggraaf spent 15 years with the Canadian Home Builders’ Association. He worked in government relations and assisted the chief operating officer, gaining valuable experience in managing a membership-based organization. In total, he boasts over 20 years of experience in housing advocacy, concentrating on creating “housing for future generations,” he said. What is he known for in Ottawa?
Burggraaf is acknowledged for steering Ottawa’s housing sector through various challenges. For example, during the pandemic, he worked hard to ensure that the industry was classified as an essential service by the province, which allowed construction of homes to continue. He’s currently pushing for more development around LRT stations and increasing housing availability to meet expected population growth. At GOHBA, he aims to “make sure that everyone feels like they’re part of that community and that they’re engaged.” Since taking on this role, the association’s membership has expanded by 30 percent. What do people say about him?
Burggraaf describes himself as a “policy wonk.” Soula Burell, director of business development and membership at GOHBA, agrees that’s a fitting description. “Jason is genuinely one of the best leaders I’ve ever worked with,” she said. “Working with Jason feels like being part of something meaningful. He brings people together, listens, and makes sure everyone has a voice.” Burggraaf mentioned that he wants his team members to feel empowered and added that his leadership style relies on trust. Burell concurred, stating he provides his team members “a place to shine.”What is something people don’t know about him?
Eager about his profession but often shy outside work hours, Burggraaf admits he’s “quiet and reserved” personally and finds public speaking “kind of intimidating most of the time.” Away from advocating for housing issues, he loves traveling, going to concerts, and watching Atlético Ottawa soccer games with his family. He’s also a big fan of The Beach Boys and collects their albums along with memorabilia from the band.Source link
