Environment Canada has released a special weather statement for most of eastern Ontario and the Gatineau region, indicating that five to 10 centimetres of heavy snow will begin and peak on Friday morning.

Snow started falling in the Bancroft area around 7:30 a. m., according to Ontario’s transportation Ministry, as the system moved eastward. By 10 a. m., it had reached Ottawa’s international airport.

The weather alert for western Quebec ceased before reaching Gracefield and areas further north. It concluded everywhere but in Gatineau and Grenville-sur-la-Rouge by about 1 p. m. on Friday.

The Belleville area issued its own statement regarding lighter snow combined with a risk of freezing rain, which also ended early Friday afternoon.

Special weather statements, marked in grey on the weather service’s map, provide information about significant weather events that may be noteworthy but don’t quite meet warning criteria, which are indicated in yellow, orange, and red.

This Friday marks the first day of spring. Ottawa is expected to hit or surpass the freezing point over the next few days, which is typical for late March.
