Athlete of the Year: Tyrone Henry
A key player on Canada’s National Para Hockey Team, Tyrone Henry added another World Championship medal to his collection in 2025. The seasoned defenceman contributed to Canada’s silver medal achievement at the 2025 World Para Hockey Championship, which included a notable semifinal shutout against Czechia. Henry and his National Team also secured silver medals at both the 2025 Para Cup and International Para Hockey Cup during a busy season leading up to the 2026 Paralympic Games. As an alternate team captain, competing in Milan Cortina will mark his third appearance in Paralympics after winning silver medals in both 2018 and 2022. This marks Henry’s second consecutive Athlete of the Year Award at the Ottawa Sports Awards and his third overall. In addition to this recognition, he is an active member and volunteer with Sledge Hockey of Eastern Ontario. Allan Ryan noticed a problem and worked hard to find solutions. His volunteer efforts led to establishing the Stittsville Sports Hall of Fame located within Cardel Rec Recreation Complex. He organized its inaugural induction ceremony that occurred in November of 2024, connecting it with local sports heroes from before amalgamation through what was previously known as Goulbourn Sports Wall of Fame. Nineteen inductees from early on had been recognized back in the early ’90s but were overlooked after amalgamation. Ryan saw how important their stories were and revived their status by updating plaques, locating a suitable new facility, and modernizing branding along with selection processes.
