Unifor announced that General Motors has postponed plans to eliminate the third shift at the Oshawa Assembly Plant until at least January 30, which supports the union’s efforts to urge both government and corporate leaders to safeguard Canadian jobs in this crucial auto sector.

It also revealed that Stellantis will reinstate a three-shift operation at the Windsor Assembly Plant starting in the first quarter of 2026.

These actions from GM and Stellantis are great news for Canadian autoworkers, and they indicate a positive sign for an industry that’s currently struggling with unfair U. S. tariffs, stated Unifor National President Lana Payne.

However, she emphasized that even with this good news, autoworkers in Oshawa and other auto communities still find themselves in a tough spot. “But it does show that the work our union is doing and the message our members are sending to decision-makers is making a difference. Fighting back matters.”

Short-Term Relief

The choice by General Motors to delay cutting the Oshawa plant’s third shift until January 30, 2026, while encouraging, is just a short-term relief. Since GM decided to cut the shift earlier this May, the union has been pushing for a complete reversal of that decision. Currently, workers at the plant assemble the Chevrolet Silverado.

“Our members in Oshawa build a high-quality truck that sells well because it’s made well by highly skilled autoworkers,” said Unifor Local 222 President Jeff Gray. “We will continue to push for the third shift to be maintained and ensure that autoworker jobs in Oshawa aren’t another casualty in this trade war.”

Unifor has firmly maintained its view that cutting the third shift at Oshawa isn’t linked to declining sales of pick-up trucks or other market demands. GM’s three-month production extension supports this stance.

While both companies’ decisions are welcomed by the union, concerns about the future of Stellantis Brampton plant remain significant for Unifor.
