A person from Oshawa is dealing with charges, together with impaired driving, after Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) noticed him tossing a bag of cocaine from his automobile window.
OPP Const. Taylor Konkle of the Whitby Detachment mentioned on March 31, officers had been conducting seatbelt checks at Freeway 401 and Simcoe Avenue in Oshawa.
They witnessed a driver enter the on-ramp and throw a small dishevelled out the window. The motive force was pulled over, and officers observed he wasn’t carrying a seat belt.
“They then located the small baggy and observed a white powdered substance in it, suspected to be cocaine,” mentioned Const. Konkle.
Officers searched the car and found a considerable amount of money, a scale and different clear luggage suspected to be for medicine.
“While speaking to the driver, he showed signs of impairment,” mentioned Const. Konkle.
A 32-year-old man from Oshawa was arrested and is now dealing with a number of drug-related charges and operations whereas impaired.
OPP Const. Kerry Schmidt mentioned officers are hoping to reinforce its impaired driving enforcement efforts attributable to a rise in impaired driving occurrences.
“Tragically, 385 people lost their lives in impaired driving-related collisions on OPP-patrolled roads between 2018 and the end of 2023,” Const. Schmidt wrote in a information launch.
“During the same period, impaired driving-related collisions have steadily climbed, with 2023 marking a 31 per cent increase when compared to the numbers during the previous five years. Impaired driving charges are also up 33 per cent over the same six-year period.”
