‘Seasonal biological changes’ in Lake Ontario are the culprits behind the unusual odour some residents have been noticing of their consuming water this summer season, in line with the Area of Durham’s Well being Division.
Oshawa Councillor Rick Kerr mentioned he had been listening to some complaints from residents about an ‘odour’ of their consuming water so he reached out to employees on the Area. The adjustments to the style and scent of the consuming water occurs each summer season, he was informed.
These episodes sometimes happen within the late summer season to early fall and will trigger a musty/earthy style or odour, regional employees defined.
“Taste and odour episodes are caused by seasonal biological changes in Lake Ontario and Lake Simcoe which produces Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborneol. These are naturally occurring compounds in lakes that do not impact the safety of the drinking water but can be detected in very small concentrations. Many municipalities that get their drinking water from surface water sources will experience the same issue.”
“The Region’s sampling and testing program confirms that our municipal drinking water meets all standards set by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. The Region’s water supply remains safe to drink.”
The response declared it’s “difficult to predict” when situations will return to regular, however style and odour episodes typically fade away after the temperature of the lake decreases.
To scale back the style and odour within the consuming water residents can refrigerate a jug of water, or add ice cubes and some drops of lemon juice to the water.
