Jesse Nurmi scored his first goal of the season during the second period, which turned out to be the game-winner as the London Knights narrowly defeated the Oshawa Generals 5-4 at the Tribute Communities Centre on Jan. 4.

Nurmi, who was brought back to the London Knights by the Islanders just days earlier, was participating in his third game since returning.

This goal was the only one netted during the last two periods after an exciting first period. The Knights fired in four goals on their initial five shots while the Generals responded with four goals on their first six attempts.

Ryan Brown opened up the scoring for London with a breakaway goal just 3:15 into the game, putting them ahead 1-0 against former Knight Jaden Cholette.

Braiden Clark added another at 5:19 right after a London power play ended, followed by Oshawa’s Brooks Rogowski scoring on a man advantage at 8:03 to cut into London’s lead.

A mere 34 seconds later, Jaxon Cover and Evan Van Gorp teamed up to set up Will Nicholl for his first goal this season, pushing London’s lead to 3-1.

Only 18 seconds after Nicholl’s tally, Cohen Bidgood found himself alone in front of Oshawa’s net and scored his seventh of the year, extending London’s lead to 4-1. Following that goal, Oshawa made a goaltending switch as Reid Thomas took over from Cholette, which seemed to energize their squad.

Brady Murnane netted his first OHL goal along with Harrison Fransson scoring his fifth in six games and veteran Lucas Moore firing in a shot from distance that tied things up at 4-4 after one period of play.

Seb Gatto replaced Aleksei Medvedev between the pipes for London at the start of period two. He and Thomas both stopped every shot they faced during an intense stretch lasting until nearly halfway through this period.

Nurmi found a puck that deflected off a skate in front of him at exactly 14:45 and slammed it home for a Knight’s lead of 5-4 heading into intermission. From there on out, London managed to keep Oshawa at bay.

Shots were even at 28 apiece. The Knights went zero for one on power plays while Oshawa succeeded twice out of three opportunities.

Denver Barkey scores his first goal in NHL

Former Knights captain Denver Barkey won’t have to exaggerate when he shares stories about how he scored his first NHL goal-it truly was picture perfect.

It really was.

Barkey now plays for the Philadelphia Flyers; he made an impressive play where he passed it over to Sean Couturier who then assisted Owen Tippett while Barkey sped past an Edmonton defender right toward their crease. Tippett sent him a pass that Barkey redirected past Calvin Pickard giving Philadelphia an early lead during their match played on Jan. 3.

Barkey led London to win a Memorial Cup championship back in 2025 racking up an impressive total of 258 points over just two hundred twenty-eight regular season games. He also contributed seventy-three points across fifty-three OHL playoff matches along with eleven points during nine Memorial Cup tournament games.

Up next

The Knights are set to return home facing off against Brantford Bulldogs on Friday January ninth at seven PM at Canada Life Place.

Brantford previously shut out London two-zero thanks largely due to thirty-nine saves by David Egorov during their earlier matchup this season.
