A Tribute to Christine Buemann

Canada’s mortgage industry lost one of its key advocates and leaders with the passing of Christine Buemann after a long fight with breast cancer.

Friends and colleagues remember her as a “rare gem,” a “powerful inspiration,” and someone who made a huge difference in the industry as well as in the lives of those lucky enough to know her personally.

Buemann began her journey in real estate investment in Northern British Columbia back in 2005, and she established the Christine Buemann Mortgage Team in 2010. In 2020, she became co-owner of The Collective Mortgage Group and joined the advisory council for Mortgage Professionals Canada (MPC).

“Christine was deeply committed to supporting the association and its members,” states an MPC announcement. “She always offered her time, insights, and encouragement. She consistently showed up for her peers with generosity and professionalism. Her contributions and dedication made a meaningful impact on our community.”

In a video tribute, colleague and friend Dustin Woodhouse described Buemann as “ridiculously upbeat all the damn time,” and “someone who mattered to our industry on many levels.”

“Even while being in the ICU ward, Christine Buemann was hopeful, optimistic, and upbeat-something she joked might have been due to the different medications she was on at that time,” he recalls. “But those of us fortunate enough to know Christine understood this was simply who she was.”

Woodhouse goes on to describe Buemann as having an impressive level of emotional intelligence along with a high IQ, calling her a “brilliant listener” who knew how to create space for others-a sentiment shared by many who worked closely with her.

Quiet strength in a loud industry

“Sometimes, if you’re truly fortunate, you meet someone whose light is so bright it reflects parts of yourself you may have forgotten about,” says Tribe Financial Group co-founder and CEO Frances Hinojosa. “Christine was that light for everyone who came into contact with her.”

Hinojosa first encountered Buemann briefly at an industry event in 2019-and like many others drawn into her presence-felt an instant connection.

“What stood out most about her was her quiet resilience coupled with an amazing ability to see goodness everywhere,” Hinojosa reflects. “Talking with her broadened your perspective-not through force but through depth, curiosity, and emotional intelligence that far surpassed most.”

In an environment known for big personalities and loud voices, many highlight how Buemann distinguished herself through quiet wisdom, thoughtful questions, and the skill to draw out genuine feelings from others without pushing her own views.

“Christine taught me-and so many others-that true leadership isn’t about titles or being forceful,” Hinojosa notes. “Real strength is soft, quiet, unassuming, filled with love. Caring deeply about people should guide not only how we lead but how we live our lives.”

Others echoed this sense of calm presence.

“In an industry that often moves quickly while speaking loudly, Christine remained thoughtful, present, and kind,” says Veronica Love, CRO of TMG The Mortgage Group and former MPC chair. She met Buemann shortly after starting out in 2010. “Our friendship thrived on honesty and mutual respect; I always felt better after talking with her.”

The people she lifted

Love describes how Buemann created one of the most unique brokerages within our industry while generously giving both time and energy towards causes close to heart.

<p“She inspired women within the mortgage field by encouraging them constantly-to speak up boldly, claim their space fully,” Love shares. "Even while battling cancer herself," Christine kept showing up-for business commitments; clients; colleagues; but above all-her family."

“She loved being a mother,” adds Love about Buemann’s two sons whom she often spoke about proudly. “Motherhood defined much of who she was.”

“Christine had vision; willing always create change while helping others gain tools necessary improve our sector overall,” mentions Catherine Melville-a connection formed through MPC’s B. C Chapter since meeting back then too! “Her fearless loving nature sought nothing back reciprocation which makes world need more like this!”
