Our dear Peter Lawlor Houge passed away on March 18th, surrounded by family, at the age of 91. He will be greatly missed.
Peter was born in Hawkesbury, Ontario, and moved to Thunder Bay when he was 18 to pursue a degree in forestry. He worked with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Great Lakes Forest Products in areas like cruising and fire protection until he retired.
He had a love for nature, animals, and the outdoors. His favorite activities included canoeing, fishing, and enjoying the sound of the wind through the pines at his cottage on Shebandowan.
In the 1970s and 80s, Peter was active with the Nancy Greene Ski League at Loch Lomond. He participated in running with the 100 Mile Club at the YMCA, played golf at Fort William Country Club, and frequented the College Fitness Centre for over 40 years while also enjoying fellowship within the Masonic Order.
Even after beginning long-term dialysis later in life, Peter didn’t let it slow him down. He focused on living in the moment, taking each day as it came, and appreciated good friends, a cup of coffee, and staying updated on stock market news.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Home Hemodialysis team at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre as well as all healthcare professionals who supported him over the last twelve years; special thanks go to his nurse Lori Lachimea and Lauri-Ann Vester.
Peter shared his life with Johan Houge. He is survived by his children Douglas Houge and Cynthia Jayne Kristensen along with son-in-law Ole Kristensen. His grandchildren include Magnus Houge Kristensen, William Kristensen, John Houge and great-grandson Ozzy.
A memorial service is set for this summer; more details will be provided soon.
Arrangements have been made through Simpler Times Cremation Centre located at 575 Central Avenue in Thunder Bay.
