Ove Klingberg Mortensen (January 16, 1933 – July 6, 2025)
He peacefully left us on July 6, 2025 surrounded by family at Andy’s House Hospice in Port Carling, reaching the age of 92.
A devoted husband to Barbara (who passed in March 2025) for nearly seven decades, and father to Mia Morris (Ron, who passed away in 2010), Robert, and Kevin (Kathleen). He was a proud Grandfar to Erik Morris and Lindsay Morris and had siblings Egil (Lis) and Mia Wear (Frank). He also cherished his roles as an uncle to Steen and Finn, as well as Rene and Andre. He was predeceased by his parents Svend Aage Mortensen and Wera Adelheid Klingberg Nielsen.
After spending his childhood in Denmark, Ove made the move to Toronto in 1955 where he began working as a house painter to support himself. Through a connection with Barb’s mother, he transitioned into the printing industry which led him into a fruitful career in sales with Canada Stamp and Crown Canada. Always approachable, Ove liked to enter through back doors on sales calls just to greet factory workers on the machines. His colleagues at Crown Canada affectionately called him “The General” later in his career.
Christmas was undoubtedly Ove’s favorite season. He and Barb embraced the Danish concept of “hygge” long before it became popular here. Anyone lucky enough to join one of Ove’s Danish lunches filled with snitters, schnapps, and song would surely remember it fondly. There were always lots of laughter, happiness, and definitely a “skål” or two involved. Whether at their home or their cottage on Long’s Lake, when family or friends gathered around him as host-with-the-most-complete with flowers on the table, music playing softly in the background-Ove truly thrived.
Tending to his lawn and garden was one of Ove’s biggest joys. He and Barb enjoyed sitting on their porch chatting with neighbors passing by. Dog walkers were especially welcomed since he always kept dog treats handy for them. Their house was never without at least one cat; Ove took great care of them brushing them nightly. His love for animals started early when he had a pet monkey named “Booby” while living in Denmark.
Ove appreciated life’s beauty deeply; he will forever be “as happy as can be” in our hearts.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Norm and Jeannie Martin along with Bob and Marilyn Allen for being such steadfast friends throughout the years as well as all those from the Covered Bridge Trail community for their kindness. The family also extends gratitude towards the medical team at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital – Bracebridge site along with all staff members at Andy’s House for their exceptional care during this time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Andy’s House Hospice in Port Carling.
A private ceremony for family will take place later.
