Maria Teresa BELCASTRO (nee. OLIVERIO)
March 23, 1931 – February 24, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we share the peaceful passing of our beloved mom and nonna.
Born in San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy, she truly embodied a “Calabrese” spirit. Her childhood was filled with struggles and challenges during tough times like World War II and the depression. At just 19, she faced the heartache of nursing her mother through illness and loss. Despite these hardships, her resilience, deep Catholic faith, and boundless love for her family shaped the incredible woman she became.
She had a knack for growing beautiful vegetable gardens and making family wine, calabrese sausages, preserves, and olives. These talents were nurtured by countless hours spent working alongside her immediate and extended family on their land. It was at this cherished spot, “la vigna”, where she discovered her passion for song, absorbed Italian proverbs, shared stories, and learned about family history. Her famous homemade bread came from many loaves baked in outdoor ovens. Here too was where she embraced being outdoors all day cultivating flowers while preparing delicious meals-a reflection of her hard work ethic without complaint and appreciation for time spent with loved ones.
After marrying and welcoming two young children into her life, she demonstrated loyalty as a devoted wife-part of a strong generation driven by hope to create better lives for their families. In November 1965, she crossed an ocean with two small kids to join her husband in Nova Scotia, Canada-leaving behind everything familiar in Italy to build a new life together. That resilience carried on as everything she did stemmed from love for her family.
In Canada, she flourished as the matriarch who built a new life alongside her husband’s family while forging lifelong friendships along the way; learning new customs and adapting to a different language. She remained humble yet eager to learn-fearless but respectful-and would generously share knowledge and wisdom without expecting anything in return. A new chapter unfolded filled with fresh memories including welcoming another child into their family tree along with witnessing marriages among her children followed by grandkids’ blessings.
Throughout her life experiences allowed her the right moments to teach lessons through proverbs or deliver quick-witted remarks paired with laughter; balancing firmness when needed but always showing affection coupled with tenderness-all while singing favorite tunes or practicing unwavering faith rituals daily! She spoke candidly when necessary yet found peace within herself knowing she’d done all possible for those closest to heart under God’s watchful eyes.
She leaves behind children Domenic and Vivian; Rosa & Carl; Maria; grandchildren Salvatore; Francesca; Sofia; sisters-in-law Assunta & Rosaria plus numerous nieces/nephews/friends across Ontario/British Columbia/Alberta/Nova Scotia/Michigan/Italy.
She is now joyfully reunited at peace alongside husband Salvatore; father Giovanni; mother Maria; siblings along with their spouses Francesco & Maria/Luigi/Angela & Antonio-and additional relatives such as Giovanni & Caterina/Giulia & Salvatore/Maria Rosa & Rosario/Francesco plus nephews Domenic/Salvatore/Domenic.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all who cared-including Drs James De Santis/Afsor/Hasan/IDA Pharmacy staff Steve/Joe/Kaitlyn/Laura/mom’s nurse Catherine over three years/hospice team/special mention Sara Brockman Care Coordinator-for tireless dedication shown through compassionate care provided throughout this journey!
