Daniel Edwin Payne
03/20/1946-09/07/2025
In the early hours of Sunday, September 7, Dan passed away after his brave fight with MS and bladder cancer.
During his month-long stay in the hospital, Dan was surrounded by the love of family and many friends from near and far.
Dan is survived by his loving wife, Penny, their four children, Graham, Sarah (Matt), Geoffrey (Kari) and Russell (Laura). He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Kaylee, Keegan, Jayden, Zachary, Danielle, Finn, Tristan, Beau and three great-grandchildren: Ciara, Liam, and Adelynn.
Born in Saint James, Dan spent his childhood there and developed a variety of interests and skills. He was a musician as well as a pilot and an active community member who coached hockey and served on committees and boards. He was also a longtime board member at the Marine Museum of Manitoba.
Dan was part of the lively music scene in Winnipeg during the 60s and 70s. He played in many bands and toured across Canada with a rock ‘n’ roll band in the mid-60s. One of his favorite musical memories was playing bass in the group Mantae. He also performed for several years in various local lounges before joining an eight-piece dance band. Besides performing, Dan wrote many songs.
Above all else, Dan was a dedicated family man. He met Penny while they were in high school. Together they built a home on River Road in St Andrews where they raised their four children. It wasn’t unusual for Dan to play guitar and sing to his kids-and later to his grandchildren-especially during bath time.
Dan’s passion for flying started when he was young; he would watch planes take off from the fence at Stevenson Field. He completed his flying training at the Winnipeg Flying Club where he eventually became Chief Flying Instructor. Later on he joined Transport Canada which allowed him to travel extensively throughout western Canada and the Arctic. In 1985 he had a memorable experience participating in the New York to Paris Air Rally after being invited by a close friend.
After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis Dan lost his commercial pilot license but remarkably became one of the first commercial pilots to regain it after such diagnosis. Throughout his battle with MS, he formed a close friendship with his neurologist. Sadly later on he needed quadruple bypass surgery which meant he could no longer hold onto his pilot privileges.
He returned to another passion-his love for music. Dan continued performing professionally for many years and even released an album of children’s music. In recent times he recorded many original compositions thanks to help from a special friend.
Dan will be deeply missed by all who knew him well.
To honor his memory, donations can be made to the Marine Museum of Manitoba or organizations like the Multiple Sclerosis Society or Heart & Stroke Foundation.
