Michael Bruce Connell, from Rapid City, Michigan, passed away on October 20, 2025, at Munson Medical Center after a long struggle with lung disease. He was 70 years old. Born on June 1, 1955, in Windsor, Ontario, Mike was the youngest of James and Ruth (Phillips) Connell’s children and enjoyed “a wonderful childhood,” especially the summers spent at his Grandpa and Grandma Phillip’s cottage on Balsam Lake in Coboconk, Ontario.

Mike had a passion for hockey and curling and was involved with both the Traverse City and Lewiston curling clubs. He also played in the senior golf league at Timber Wolf Golf Course. A man of many skills, he worked over the years as a groundskeeper, landscaper, construction worker, general contractor and finally owned the Pooch Palace dog kennel in Rapid City. Known for his kindness and selflessness, Mike always lent a helping hand to others.

In August 2013, Mike met Mary King at “The Forks Landing” of the Boardman River while leading a kayaking trip with the Traverse Area Paddle Club. They started dating that September and quickly realized they were meant for each other due to their love for nature, shared sarcastic humor and plenty of laughter. Together they kayaked and hiked numerous trails across both the United States and Canada over twelve years; they had just returned from an amazing month-long adventure through Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Maine. This journey began with a family reunion in Coboconk that Mike had organized a couple of years earlier. He felt truly happy to make it there despite his health challenges.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents along with some aunts and uncles as well as his beloved dog Max. He is survived by his brother David Connell; sister Carol (Gary) Eugenio; nieces; nephews; numerous cousins; friends; Mary; her children; and grandchildren. His strength during illness inspired many people around him. He will be greatly missed.

If you wish to honor him further, memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army or Ronald Mc Donald House or St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. A Celebration of Life will occur in May 2026.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign his online guestbook at www. mortensenfuneralhomes. com
