Len Simms, a former politician from Newfoundland and Labrador and CEO of the housing corporation, has died at the age of 82.

Premier Tony Wakeham honored Simms in a statement released on Monday afternoon, calling him a “true public servant to the people of our great province.”

Simms began his political career in 1979 as the Progressive Conservative MHA for Grand Falls and served three years as Speaker of the House of Assembly. He held several cabinet positions under Premier Brian Peckford’s government and made an unsuccessful bid for party leadership in 1989.

He became the PC Leader in 1991 and led the party during the 1993 election, where they won 16 out of 52 seats while Liberal premier Clyde Wells secured a comfortable second term.

Simms stepped away from politics in 1995.

A decade later, Premier Danny Williams appointed him as CEO of the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. He remained in that role for nearly nine years.

Wakeham remarked that Simms “left a lasting mark on numerous community and charitable organizations throughout the province. His family was the driving force behind his desire to make our province a better place for all.”
