January 4, 1943 – February 17, 2026
Robert Howes passed away at Trillium Manor in Orillia on February 16, 2026, at the age of 83. He was a devoted father to Chris Howes from Orillia and Beau Howes from Vancouver. Bob took pride in being a grandfather to Jack, Rhys, Shyloh, and Emma. He was also a dear brother to Dorothy Clayton and Gwen Prentice. Bob will be fondly remembered by his family, friends, former teammates, and the numerous athletes he guided throughout his impressive career. Before turning professional, he excelled as a dual-sport athlete at Queen’s University where he played football and basketball.
Bob’s impact on Canadian football is significant. As a strong offensive lineman, he enjoyed a successful fourteen-season career in the Canadian Football League, mainly with the Edmonton Eskimos. His time in Edmonton was filled with achievements; he served as team captain and played an integral role in five Grey Cup championship teams (1975, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981).
His love for the game continued well after his playing days ended when he returned to Queen’s as an adjunct faculty member of the School of Physical Education and coached with the Gaels for many years. This included being part of the coaching staff for the National Championship team in 1992. Bob concluded his coaching journey by taking on various roles at both the University of Toronto and St. Francis Xavier University.
A celebration of life will take place in Kingston, Ontario in June 2026 – details regarding the date and location will be shared soon. Donations made in Bob’s honor will support future student-athletes while ensuring that his values continue to inspire Queen’s Football for years ahead.
