Donald Robert Thatcher, 74, passed away peacefully on January 5th, 2026 with his loving wife of 51 years by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Don was born and raised in Fort William, where he attended both Westgate and Churchill high schools. He later obtained a diploma in mechanical engineering technology from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute and returned to Thunder Bay to work at the local train plant. He began his career at Hawker Sidley and retired under Bombardier, witnessing many changes in ownership over the years. After 34 years of dedicated service, he retired in 2008. A principled individual, he was an active member of his union local, serving in various roles on the executive committee and negotiating many contracts throughout his career. In his spare time, Don loved hunting and fishing, boating, and was a big fan of motorsports. He also served as the Recording Secretary for the Westfort Prosvita Fish and Game Club for around 40 years.

Don was predeceased by his parents Flo and Ted Thatcher as well as his parents-in-law Mona and Ray Seguin.

He is survived by his wife Rae Anne along with their children Kelly and Dean (Leah), sister Jan (Bob Kemp), and brother Jack (Pat). Many other relatives and friends also remain.

Cremation has taken place. As per Don’s wishes to be laid to rest at Oliver Lake-his cherished spot-a celebration of life will occur later when the ice has melted.

If desired, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or another charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated instead of flowers.
