July 19, 1941 – January 11, 2026
With heavy hearts, we share the news of Charles John Mintenko’s passing on January 11th, 2026, “Sister’s birthday” at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Born on July 19, 1941, Charlie grew up in Slate River Valley. He worked as a porter for Westmount Hogarth until he retired about 30 years ago. He was one of the founding members of the Oliver Paipoonge Volunteer Fire Department and was actively involved with St. Marks Anglican Church.
Charlie was always busy at home. Well-known in the community, you could spot him curling, golfing, disking, snowmobiling, selling merchandise at the CRT stand at the racetrack, or cheering for the Thunderwolves, North Stars, and Walleye at local hockey games.
His unforgettable personality made him a friend to everyone he met. If you encountered him once, you’d be friends for life. He truly lived life to its fullest-kind-hearted and generous enough to give you the shirt off his back.
A humble man who loved his family fiercely; Uncle Charlie never missed a family gathering-be it supper time or events like football games, racing days, soccer matches, hockey games or graduations-he was always there to cheer us on.
This past year has been tough as Uncle Charlie fought cancer and missed out on socializing with friends. We want to express our gratitude for all the love and support he felt every day from his friends. Special thanks go out to Lakehead Nurse Practitioners Carolan and Stacey; the Cancer Centre; Bayshore staff especially Julius; and those at TBRHSC’s units 2C, 2South and 2North at St. Joseph’s Hospital who showed exceptional care and compassion.
He is survived by “sister” Charlene Reed along with his nieces and nephew: Tracy, Michele, Greg and Rachel; great niece and nephews: Christina and Jacob Dean; Drake and Kolby Reed; Uncle Donald Mac Gregor; Aunt Audrey Mintenko; plus many cousins. He was predeceased by his parents George and Christina (Gertie) Mintenko as well as brother-in-law Melven Reed.
Charlie had a heart of gold just like a Werthers candy wrapper which he’d “sneakily” hand over whenever you saw him. It’s hard not to remember someone who gave us so much joy to hold onto.
Visitation will take place Sunday, January 18th at St. Mark’s Anglican Church located at 5 St. Mark’s Street in Rosslyn from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The funeral service will follow on Monday, January 19th at St. Mark’s Anglican Church starting at 1:00pm. Donations to Rural Cupboard would be greatly appreciated.
We love you Uncle Charlie!
