The Northern Clipper
It is with a heavy heart that we share the sudden loss of Brandon Nicolas Esquega on January 8, 2026. He was born on December 15, 2000 to Gloria Esquega and Leo Tookenay.
Brandon was affectionately called the “Northern Clipper” by his friends in the boxing community. He earned a silver medal during the 2018 Winter Games held in Brampton, Ontario.
He took great pride in his achievements and admired Peter Panetta, who inspired him to pursue his Boxing certification. Once he achieved this goal, he became a role model for kids at the Underground Gym where he began training.
Starting his fitness journey at a young age, Brandon came home one day and told Theresa (his adoptive parent) about getting a job interview, which he nailed. From that point forward, he always had work. He enjoyed collaborating with his older brother Jordan at RML Contracting.
Eventually, he joined the firefighting crew from Geraldton and looked forward to reconnecting with them every year.
Brandon is survived by his mother Gloria, father Leo, brothers Jordan, Talon, Milton, Dante, Ethan and Alexander. His Grandparents Myria (Laverne), Fred and Rita; his adopted parent Theresa; special auntie Lucy (Lionel); along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother Tristan; sister Christine; uncle Gene; Great Grandparents Margaret and Victor Sr.; Grandfather Marcel; as well as his special partner Tala and their baby.
The funeral service will take place on Friday, January 16, 2026 when family and friends gather at St. Anne’s Church at 11:30 AM officiated by Father Biju Mathew. The interment will occur later at Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
Arrangements have been made through Westfort Chapel located at 420 West Gore Street at James in Thunder Bay.
