April 26, 1936 – January 16, 2026

Arthur Grenfell Olsen passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, at the age of 89, with his wife by his side. He had been surrounded by family since the holidays.

Arthur worked as a logger for most of his life-a job he was proud of that showcased his strong work ethic and love for nature. He found happiness in fishing, logging, and especially spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed socializing in Emo and Fort Frances, where he could talk for hours and make anyone feel right at home.

Some of Arthur’s best memories were made at The Cabin at Clearwater Lake, filled with laughter and great conversations with those he loved most. His grandchildren adored him just as much as he adored them. He was famous for his nightly ice cream routine and the twinkle in his eye when sneaking treats to his grandkids-these moments will always be cherished by them.

Arthur will be remembered for his kindness, storytelling ability, dedication to family, and knack for making people feel appreciated. The impact he had on so many lives will live on through the love he shared.

He was preceded in death by his dear son Ronald Arthur Olsen; beloved daughter Sherry Lynn Olsen Van Heyst; mother Sylvia Olsen; father Stengrim Olsen; brothers Dean and Alfred (Shirley) Olsen; along with brothers-in-law David Barker and Stanley Sandmoen.

He is survived by his wife Ida Olsen; daughter Tammy Snelgrove (Roderick); grandchildren Bobbi Olsen, Noelle Strain (Joel), Bradley Beninger (Crystal Burton), Aaron Olsen (Stacey Lee), Tyler Olsen (Shilah Harmer), Tanner Olsen, Michael Snelgrove (Jackie Pagnotta), and Cassandra Snelgrove (Zachary Lalime). He was also a proud great-grandfather to Victoria Turnbull (Justin Haines), Ash Boan, Stephanie Boan, Cohen Strain, Griffen Strain, Jude Olsen, Gus Olsen, Ivy Pagnotta Snelgrove, Grayson Lalime, Bowen Olsen, and Zavier Lalime. Additionally, he is survived by sisters Beverly Sandmoen and Evelyn Barker; sisters-in-law Lois and Bonnie Olsen; along with brother Paul Olsen.

Arthur also leaves behind a large loving family of siblings, nieces and nephews as well as a wide circle of dear friends across the globe.

He will be missed deeply but fondly remembered.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street, Thunder Bay.
