Angus Alexander Grant Mac Donald, a long-time resident of Kaministiquia, passed away on January 14, 2026. He was born in Brantford, Ontario in 1943 and grew up in Toronto and Stony Lake. Angus was preceded in death by his parents, Lieutenant-Colonel George Leslie Mac Donald and Florence Gibson Mac Donald, as well as his sister Janet Ajzenstat. He is survived by his wife Rebecca Dickson, daughters Molly Mac Donald (Matti Hansen) and Mary Jane Mac Donald (Chad Kirvan), grandchildren Lee and Kiki, sister Kady Mac Donald Denton, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will greatly miss him.
For those who didn’t know him well, he might be remembered for a variety of achievements: supporting small businesses and community growth in First Nations and Inuit areas of Northern Ontario and what was then Northwest Territories; advocating for funding to acquire a brachytherapy machine for the Cancer Centre at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre; creating the Handmade Thunder Bay Map showcasing local artists’ studios; representing Ontario at Ottawa’s Winterlude Festival snow-sculpting competition on Parliament Hill alongside his team; and hosting the Little Dog Classic for 25 years-Canada’s longest-running Frisbee golf tournament.
To those who had the pleasure of knowing him-which were many-he’ll be remembered as an incredibly unique individual: engaging, artistic, intelligent, fun-loving, a chess enthusiast, storyteller and Leaf’s fan like no other. As one friend put it best: “We are diminished.”
A memorial gathering will be held at the Kaministiquia Community Centre on Sunday March 1, 2026 at 2:00 pm.
