April 27, 1934 – January 27, 2026
Adele Rea Archer, who lived in Thunder Bay for many years, passed away peacefully in Sault Ste. Marie at the age of 91.
She was born in Winnipeg and spent her childhood on Mc Kenzie Island in Red Lake. Adele went on to study at the University of Western Ontario, where she graduated in 1957, before continuing her education at the Toronto Teachers’ College.
After finishing her studies, she returned to northwestern Ontario and began teaching French and History at high schools in Fort William and Port Arthur. A few years later, Madame Archer joined Fort William Collegiate Institute, where she became a beloved teacher and worked until her retirement in 1994.
Her enthusiasm for teaching and engaging style left a lasting impression on countless students who remember her fondly!
Adele will be dearly missed by her three children Nancy Jane (Kari), Susan (Doug), and John (Kim), along with her six grandchildren Madelaine, Lauren, William, Benjamin, Emily, and Gillian. She is also remembered by her nephew Timothy. She was predeceased by her husband Lawrie as well as her sisters Grace and Marjorie, and brothers Lawrence, Albert, and Fred. Additionally, she is predeceased by Simon, Bentley, Tess, and Katy-her cherished Black Labrador Retrievers.
Madame Archer had many hobbies and dedicated a lot of time to volunteering. She sold daffodils every April for the Canadian Cancer Society and served on their local board while also driving patients to their appointments. She was involved with Magnus Theatre’s board and raised funds for UNICEF as a staff representative at F. W. C. I. Additionally, she was an active member of the Anglican Church Women of Canada (ACW) and served on the Altar Guild at St. Paul’s Anglican Church. Furthermore, she volunteered with the Salvation Army and offered support to Shelter House.
A proud member of the Canadian Federation of University Women as well; this group included many close friends with whom she enjoyed delightful Christmas eggnogs!
Though we are saddened by her passing as family members we celebrate the rich life she led. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the staff at Sault Area Hospital for their care and kindness during this time. We especially appreciate everyone from the Echo Bay wing at Extendicare Maple View for their compassion over her final week-she felt comfortable under your wonderful care.
A memorial service will take place on Monday, April 6 at 11 a. m., held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church located at 808 Ridgeway Street in Thunder Bay. Everyone is welcome to join us.
If you wish to honor Adele’s memory with donations instead of flowers please consider contributing to the Canadian Cancer Society.
