Only sparklers would be permitted if a fireworks ban goes into effect.

Many towns and cities in Ontario have already enacted bans or restrictions on fireworks. Now, another major municipality is preparing to follow suit.

This Monday, the Town of Oakville will decide on a report that suggests banning the sale and discharge of consumer fireworks at all times.

Currently, Oakville has strict regulations controlling firework use, allowing them only on private property during Victoria Day, Canada Day, New Year’s Day, and recognized religious or cultural events.

If the new regulations are approved, they would go further by imposing fines starting at $300 for anyone who violates them.

There could be exceptions for those who obtain a permit from the fire department; however, this would only apply if a professional pyrotechnician oversees the event.

The report set to be discussed at Monday’s meeting states that this ban aims to prioritize health and safety while addressing concerns about noise, property damage, fire hazards, environmental effects, and the well-being of individuals, pets, and wildlife.

Research and surveys conducted by the town indicate that most residents support such a ban and that only a small segment of the population currently purchases fireworks.

“It appears that the activity’s benefits are limited while its negative impacts extend broadly to the community,” the report says.

Other municipalities like Brampton and Whitchurch-Stouffville have implemented complete bans, whereas Mississauga, Milton, Halton Hills, among others have established various restrictions on fireworks use.
