After months of renovations and preparations, Walmart has officially opened its doors to customers at its latest location in Ontario.

As of 7 a. m. today (Oct. 9), the 100,000 sq-ft store is welcoming shoppers at Third Line and Rebecca Street in Oakville, previously known as Hopedale Mall, now rebranded as South Oakville Centre.

This is the second supercentre to open in Oakville; the first one debuted 20 years ago on Hays Boulevard near Trafalgar Road and Dundas Street.

<p Like all supercentres, the new store will offer a diverse selection of products, including clothing, furniture, appliances, and everyday household items. Additionally, there will be a pharmacy on-site. A spacious grocery section will feature fresh produce, meats, frozen foods, dairy products, baked goods, and other food items. Customers can also enjoy hot meals available for purchase.

Over the years, many retailers have come and gone from this mall including Kmart and Zellers; now it’s Walmart’s chance to shine.

Target was the last department store that tried out this location but left after just two years in 2015, creating a significant gap at the mall.

Hopedale first opened in 1959 as an outdoor plaza and was among the earliest of its kind in town. By 1971, it underwent a major renovation transforming it into a covered mall that served residents on the west side.

While popular spots like Metro, LCBO, and Gino’s Pizza continue to draw customers in, many are hopeful that Walmart’s solid reputation will attract even more visitors.
