As we tackle the ongoing effects of COVID-19 on our health, society, and economy, we’re also striving for a greener and more sustainable recovery that will bring fresh jobs and opportunities for workers and businesses. That’s why we’re backing initiatives to speed up our country’s clean energy shift, making zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) more affordable while increasing the number of charging stations nationwide. This effort will help position us as a prime hub for designing, developing, and manufacturing the sustainable technologies of tomorrow.

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced their support for Ford Motor Company’s investment in its Oakville Assembly Complex. The project is valued at $1.8 billion and includes federal and provincial contributions of $295 million each. This investment will help secure 5,400 good-paying middle-class jobs within Ford’s production workforce in Canada and boost our green economy, particularly in Southern Ontario where many Canadians work throughout the auto supply chain. Transforming the Oakville Assembly Complex into a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) production facility aligns with the Government of Canada’s commitment to sustainable growth. This move toward electrification aims to establish Canada’s automotive industry as a global leader in BEV manufacturing.

Together, we’re working towards building a healthier, safer, cleaner, more competitive Canada that’s fairer and more inclusive for future generations. Our recovery from COVID-19 aims to create additional economic opportunities for Canadians while achieving our goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. We plan to accomplish this by partnering with industry leaders to attract ZEV manufacturing facilities through significant investments. Both the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario are dedicated to collaborating with Canada’s automotive partners like Ford and Unifor to draw investments into zero-emissions technologies while ensuring our automotive sector remains competitive globally.
