Over 3,000 workers are now searching for jobs following the shutdown of Oakville’s Ford facility for retooling.

In response, the provincial government is contributing over $684,000 to set up a new action centre aimed at assisting 3,179 laid-off employees.

This funding will enable Unifor, the union representing these workers, to provide job search help, access to training programs, personalized career guidance, and support with resume writing and interview prep.

“As the Oakville Ford plant prepares to transition to electric vehicles (EV), this action centre will offer essential services that workers need to quickly get back on their feet and find new employment to support themselves and their families while the company focuses on retooling and reopening,” stated David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.

The new action centre will be available in Oakville until at least next March. It will provide current information about job openings, skills development programs, tailored career counselling, networking chances, free computer access, and other resources for those affected by the recent plant closure.

“Our union collaborated closely with the Government of Ontario to ensure that all auto and auto parts workers in Halton impacted by this transition receive timely access to peer-led employment support and services from this action centre when they need it most,” said Lana Payne, Unifor National president.

“While we were glad to open this action centre promptly, our main focus is still on protecting every job and worker’s livelihood during this EV transition so that no auto or auto parts worker gets left behind.”

The action centre can be found at 475 North Service Road East in Oakville.

“Ford Oakville workers play a crucial role in the future of this plant as well as in Halton Region and Ontario,” mentioned Marc Brennan, chair of Ford’s Oakville Plant with Unifor Local 707.

“As we collaborate with all parties toward a solution that minimizes downtime for retooling at Ford’s Oakville plant, we’ll make sure we’re supporting our community by providing urgently needed resources from our Local 707 union hall with coordinators and helpers who come directly from the shop floor.”
