Debwewin: The Oakville Truth Project recognizes Treaty Week

Group goals to extend consciousness of Treaty relationships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous folks

The primary full week of November (3 by means of 9) is Treaty Recognition Week. Debwewin: The Oakville Fact Challenge is working to boost consciousness round Oakville’s treaties and promote native reality and reconciliation.

Treaties are agreements between the Authorities of Canada and Indigenous teams that outline ongoing rights and obligations on either side. Treaty Recognition Week was created to honour the significance of Treaties and encourage residents to study extra about Treaty rights and relationships.

As Elder Peter Schuler stated, “what higher place to hunt reality than your individual area people.”

By studying extra about collective treaty rights and obligations, the Oakville group can higher perceive and nurture relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, in addition to taking efficient motion in direction of native Fact & Reconciliation.

There are two treaties that cowl Oakville – Treaties 14 and 22, signed in 1806 and 1820, respectively.

“Treaties provide a framework between Nations for living together and sharing the land originally occupied by Indigenous peoples,” stated Chair of Debwewin Committee. “Although many treaties were signed more than a century ago, Treaty commitments continue to be as valid as when they were originally signed.”
