An Oakville, Ont. homeowner has been targeted by thieves not just once, but twice this month. He’s sharing his family’s frightening ordeal to warn others about the importance of securing their homes against potential burglars.

“It’s shocking to have this happen when you think you’re living in one of the safer parts of the GTA,” said the homeowner, whose identity Global News is keeping confidential for safety reasons.

“We were all asleep at 3 a. m., and suddenly we woke up. I had a man standing beside me with a gun to my head, wearing a mask and hoodie, while my wife was on the other side. She asked, ‘Hey, what’s going on?’ There was another guy there with a gun pointed at her too. They were just saying, ‘Wake up, get up. Don’t do anything stupid,’” he recalled.

Halton Regional Police confirmed in a press release that on Jan. 10 “the masked suspects entered the bedrooms of the sleeping residents and pointed firearms at the victims, demanding valuables and keys to their vehicles. The victims complied with the demands, and shortly after that, the suspects left in a dark sedan along with the victim’s Mercedes SUV.”

“For my family it was more traumatic than anything else. My kids have never experienced anything like that before … emotionally, it definitely shook us up,” he said.

The suspects were captured on home surveillance video leaving the property right before the man’s wife called 9-1-1.

The residents reached out to police who quickly located both vehicles traveling eastbound on Dundas Street. The suspects abandoned the stolen Mercedes near Prince Michael Drive in Oakville and fled on foot into a residential area close to Kestell Boulevard,” Halton Regional Police stated in their press release.

Despite an extensive search involving K9 units, they could not find the suspects.

The family spent days securing their home by adding extra security features at both front and back doors.

A week later though, surveillance footage shows four suspects trying to break into their house in the middle of night.

“They obviously had all our car keys and knew there was a Porsche in our garage. This time there were four guys involved. Exactly one week later at 2:30 in morning we woke up to loud banging,” said the homeowner.

The video shows one man repeatedly kicking at their door while another tries pushing it open.

“We had our alarm company bring us a panic button which my wife hit immediately as she jumped up. We called 9-1-1 right away and rushed out of our room for our kids’ safety to check if they were okay. We went into my older son’s room where we could see out towards our front yard … even though our alarm had gone off they kept kicking because clearly they didn’t care about that,” he added.

A few minutes later, all four suspects ran away from the scene.

“It feels like these guys are just being used because they can get released on bail so quickly after getting caught-then they re-offend soon after that. We hear this from police too; they’re frustrated since they do everything right but these guys are out again within no time,” he mentioned.

Halton Regional Police Constable Ryan Anderson described this family’s ordeal as ‘completely unacceptable’ stating that home invasions are treated as top priority across Oakville and surrounding areas.

Advice for Homeowners

He shared some tips for homeowners noting how thieves often pick targets based on parked vehicles outside.

“If possible keep your cars hidden from view; if you can use your garage make sure it’s clean enough for parking inside so those outside cars don’t attract attention from thieves checking driveways; also reinforce entry points since they’re becoming bolder about breaking through locked doors,” Anderson suggested.

Since then , the homeowner along with neighbors decided pooled resources together hiring an overnight private security guard patrol.&copy 2025 Global News , a division of Corus Entertainment Inc.
