In Ontario, three individuals fell victim to a scam involving fake car discounts promoted on social media.

The Caledon OPP first learned about the fraudulent vehicle transactions back in July.

A post on Facebook Marketplace advertised a family discount for car sales, according to police reports.

According to the OPP, the victims sent money to purchase these discounted cars, and the deals were finalized at a dealership.

Although the funds were sent, they did not apply towards the vehicle loans created as part of this fraud, police explained.

On March 5, Caledon OPP arrested and charged one suspect.

Rafael Layton, 52, from Oakville, faces charges for possession of property obtained through crime over $5,000, three counts of fraud over $5,000, intimidation with threats of violence, and laundering criminal proceeds.

The accused is set to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on April 3.

If you’ve been a victim of this type of fraud or any other scams, it’s crucial to report it to your local police right away.

After notifying law enforcement, you should also reach out to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501.

If it’s not an emergency situation, you can share information anonymously with Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at https://peelcrimestoppers. ca. When you contact Crime Stoppers, your identity stays confidential and you won’t need to testify.
