A company from Hamilton and a driver from Mississauga are facing several charges after police stopped an unsafe commercial truck in a small town in southwestern Ontario.

The Ontario Provincial Police reported that an officer was conducting proactive traffic checks in Minto, located about 80 kilometres south of Owen Sound, when they pulled over a truck for inspection last Friday just before 2:30 p. m. on Wellington Road 6.

After inspecting the commercial vehicle, the Hamilton-based company was charged with the following offences under the Highway Traffic Act:

Operate commercial motor vehicle – no valid Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration certificate. Fail to ensure periodic inspections and maintenance are carried out. Fail to supply driver with daily inspection schedule. Fail to ensure daily inspection report is accurately completed. Fail to ensure performance standards are met. No name on commercial vehicle.

The 53-year-old driver from Mississauga received charges for:

Drive commercial motor vehicle – No valid Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration certificate. Improper mudguards – commercial motor vehicle.

Additionally, police noted that the driver also got four warnings under the Highway Traffic Act and the Dangerous Goods Transportation Act for:

Fail to surrender inspection schedule. Fail to accurately complete daily inspection report. Improper clearance lights – commercial motor vehicle. Fail to comply with federal regulations safety standard – insecure load.

Both the company and driver will appear in Provincial Offences Court in Guelph at a later date.

The OPP stated that unsafe commercial vehicles can be dangerous for other drivers on the road.

“Operating a commercial motor vehicle with improper equipment or major defects can be extremely dangerous to everyone out on the road. We all play a role in keeping our roadways safe,” OPP said in a news release on Monday.

If anyone sees what they think is an unsafe commercial vehicle posing a risk on the road, they’re encouraged to call 911, according to police advice. People can also contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
