An unidentified individual was found dead following a significant house fire in Mississauga, Ont., authorities reported on Tuesday.

Emergency services responded to the residence at Mirage Place and Select Court around 10:40 p. m. Monday, where the home was already fully engulfed in flames.

Officials noted that several callers reported hearing a loud explosion from the house before it became completely involved in fire.

Peel Regional Police Const. Tyler Bell confirmed that one person was found deceased inside the home, but their identity remains unknown at this time.

“The coroner’s office will be investigating the cause of the death of the individual inside,” Bell stated. “If any of those investigations determine criminality, Peel police will then take over the investigation.”

Authorities have confirmed that all known residents of the home have been accounted for and were out of the country during the fire.

“Now we have the difficult task of trying to determine who is the [deceased] individual. We don’t have details like age, gender…. We have no reason to believe anyone should have been in the home that’s associated with the residence at this time,” Bell explained.

The Office of the Fire Marshal is overseeing an investigation into how and why the fire started, which remains undetermined.

“This is preliminary,” Jim Demetriou with the Office of the Fire Marshal said. “We are here to find the origin, cause and circumstances around the fire.”

Demetriou mentioned that it’s too soon to say whether an explosion triggered the fire or where exactly it began within the home.

The structure is currently deemed too unstable for a thorough search to take place.

The Office of Fire Marshal has requested additional support, including heavy machinery for debris removal. An engineer will also evaluate building safety before investigators can resume their efforts.

As it stands now, only one body has been discovered inside, though police indicate that could change as further searches are conducted.

No signs of criminal activity have been identified at this point.
