Concept for development at the Clarkson GO station.

The community will have another opportunity – this time face-to-face – to learn about a significant condo project that aims to transform an older neighborhood in Mississauga.

The initiative, proposed by Ontario’s Ministry of Infrastructure, plans to turn the northern parking lot of the Clarkson GO station, located at Southdown Road and Bromsgrove Road, into a high-rise complex featuring seven condominium towers that will accommodate thousands of new residents in 2,434 apartment units.

Last week, there was a virtual meeting lasting 90 minutes where locals could ask questions regarding the project.

The in-person gathering is scheduled for this Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Holiday Inn Express, 2125 North Sheridan Way, starting at 6:30 p. m.

Representatives from the Ontario government will be present during the session to respond to inquiries about the project.

Referred to as a transit-oriented community (TOC), this development is part of a larger effort by the Ontario government aimed at increasing housing density along rapid transit routes. The Clarkson GO station serves as a key hub on the Lakeshore GO train line that connects commuters with Union Station in Toronto.

“The proposal for the Clarkson GO Transit-Oriented Community has the potential to deliver new housing, employment opportunities, and publicly accessible areas that will support the creation of a community that has public spaces for relaxation and play next to the Clarkson GO station along the Lakeshore West Line,” according to information supplied by Infrastructure Ontario.

No timeline has been provided for this project, nor is there any mention of who will be constructing it.

This housing strategy aligns with ongoing enhancements to the Lakeshore GO line that aim to add more trains for faster service between suburban areas and Toronto due to rising population numbers across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

The existing north parking lot accommodates 1,020 vehicles along with a drop-off zone near the entrance of the train station. There’s also a south parking lot and an additional parking garage available on-site.

Clarkson GO station acts as a central hub for bus connections too, including Mi Way (Mississauga Transit), Oakville Transit, and services from the GO Bus network.

You can register for the meeting here.

The plans concerning Clarkson GO station follow an announcement made in October about another similar intensification project beside Cooksville GO station.

This upcoming venture proposes building 3,000 housing units within eight tower structures.
