Companions in Homebuilding, a report from Mississauga’s Housing Job Power, challenges all ranges of presidency to suppose and act in a different way.

The report contains 30 actions to “kick start” improvement throughout town.

As a part of the following steps, Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish will introduce a movement subsequent week outlining rapid actions town will take to enhance housing affordability.

“Now is the time for new solutions. I want to thank my housing task force for their time, expertise, and advice. We must act now to get shovels in the ground — our residents deserve nothing less,” stated Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish.

The duty drive, established by Mayor Parrish shortly after taking workplace in June 2024, contains greater than 30 consultants from Ontario’s non-public and non-profit housing sectors. Over 4 months, the group collaborated with federal and provincial ministries to develop a collection of actionable suggestions centered on 4 precedence areas:

Reform Growth Charges, Taxes, and Charges: The duty drive recommends 14 actions to assist scale back housing prices by balancing demand and incentivizing extra inexpensive housing developments.

Replace Constructing and Design Requirements: Seven actions are proposed to spice up effectivity throughout the business and streamline constructing processes to assist improve housing provide.

Rework Zoning to Unlock Housing: The report recommends 5 actions to make zoning rules more practical, offering builders with the knowledge they should transfer ahead with tasks.

Create Sustainable Packages and Funding: The duty drive advocates for 4 actions to assist the event of long-term, sustainable funding for inexpensive housing via the non-public sector.

The report additionally highlights 14 rapid actions the Metropolis is already taking to sort out the housing disaster, together with:

Rising Housing Provide: Increasing permissions for an extra 124,000 residential models, supporting mixed-use communities round transit hubs, and exploring artistic housing options above metropolis services.
Bringing Down Prices: Providing monetary incentives for purpose-built leases, lowering prices for constructing houses on residential heaps, and reducing borrowing prices for non-profit builders.
Streamlining Processes: Establishing a housing-focused workforce at Metropolis Corridor to fast-track purposes, replace city design pointers, and enhance the housing improvement approval course of.

Within the coming months, metropolis employees will replace the Metropolis’s Housing Motion Plan to include the suggestions from the Mayor’s Housing Job Power.

“Mississauga is taking bold steps to align housing priorities with our vision for economic growth and urban vibrancy,” stated Andrew Whittemore, Commissioner of Planning and Constructing. “By modernizing zoning and expanding residential capacity, we’re ensuring the city remains a competitive, inclusive, and prosperous place to live.”

Robert Blazevski, President and Chief Working Officer of DiamondCorp, added, “I am pleased to be part of the Mayor’s Housing Task Force and look forward to continuing to work with the city to build new homes for years to come.”

Salvatore Cavarretta, Vice President of Growth at TMG Builders, praised the report, calling it “a blueprint of tangible action items that, when implemented, can pave the way for the delivery of much-needed new housing in Mississauga.”
