Two individuals were physically removed from the Mississauga Convention Centre today after they interrupted Premier Doug Ford during a presentation organized by the Mississauga Board of Trade.

Ford was there to discuss Ontario’s economy when the protestors began shouting about mercury contamination affecting Grassy Narrows First Nation.

His security team promptly escorted the two women out of the venue.

Peel Police reported that the pair was taken off the property: “No arrests were made and the individuals left without incident.”

Although Ford mostly ignored the disruption and continued his speech, he did acknowledge the hecklers during a brief pause, noting they arrived later than anticipated.

This situation is linked to what some in the medical community deem one of Canada’s worst environmental crises. The uncontrolled release of toxic mercury from a mill into Wabigoon River waters began in the early 1960s, severely impacting fish populations that are a primary food source for local Indigenous people in Northern Ontario. The ongoing consumption of this contaminated fish has led to persistent health issues within the community, including premature deaths.

The provincial government has recognized that Grassy Narrows residents have been harmed by mercury exposure and has promised to implement a clean-up program for their waters, but this plan has yet to be put into action.
