Ontario Provincial Police have announced that charges have been filed related to a series of rock-throwing incidents that led to serious injuries in Markham last fall.

After an extensive investigation lasting several months, two 18-year-old men from Markham and Richmond Hill were arrested on Wednesday. They each face charges of aggravated assault, two counts of mischief endangering life, and mischief causing property damage.

Since these events happened while they were under 18, their identities are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act and cannot be disclosed.

OPP confirmed to that the two individuals arrested are the same ones who faced charges from York Regional Police earlier this year for similar offenses.

From Friday, Sept. 20 to Sunday, Nov. 30, 2024, Aurora OPP received numerous reports about rocks being intentionally thrown at moving vehicles by either a passing vehicle or individual.

The police reported that one rock hit a vehicle traveling northbound on Highway 48 just past Major Mackenzie Drive in Markham, damaging the driver’s side-view mirror.

Additionally, three other incidents involved rocks being thrown at moving vehicles by either a passing vehicle or person; one of these resulted in a collision.

The driver and passenger of one affected vehicle were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries due to the crash on Highway 48.

In another case, a rock was thrown at a bus’s windshield while it was traveling on Highway 48 north of Major Mackenzie Drive; fortunately, no injuries occurred according to police reports.

This past January, both individuals faced multiple charges from York Regional Police relating to similar incidents.

At that time, police charged the then-17-year-old boy with two counts of mischief under $5,000 while also charging the 18-year-old with mischief under $5,000 as well.

A spokesperson for police informed that these new charges stemmed from an incident where a rock was thrown at a car parked near Neeley and Stalmaster roads in Markham on Jan. 26.

The spokesperson added that the 17-year-old was also charged with throwing a rock at a moving vehicle near Highway 48 and Hoover Park on July 10, 2024.

The spokesperson confirmed that while damage was done to the vehicle involved in this incident, there were no reported injuries.

Both accused individuals have been released and are set to appear before the Ontario court of justice in Newmarket later on.
