A young child was taken to the hospital by paramedics in critical condition following a fire at a Markham residence on Friday afternoon, according to York Regional Police.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at a home on Spragg Circle near Ninth Line and 16th Avenue shortly after noon.
The details surrounding the fire remain unclear, but officials reported that firefighters discovered a young child while clearing the house.
They indicated that the child had serious injuries.
Investigators mentioned that there were others inside the home during the fire, but they managed to get out safely.
“There were four people in the house at the time of the fire but only one was taken to hospital,” James Dickson, York regional police’s media officer said to reporters.
The Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal has been called in as part of the ongoing investigation.
