Toys “R” Us Canada has announced that it will close five stores in Ontario while also renovating several others as part of its effort to “optimize” its business operations.

The affected locations include a store in Argyle Mall in London, as well as shops on Steeles Avenue West in Thornhill, Hurontario Street in Mississauga, Marcus Drive in Sudbury, and Centennial Parkway North in Stoney Creek.

The company hasn’t provided details on how many employees will be affected by these closures. Toys “R” Us currently runs 81 stores throughout Canada, according to its website.

In addition to shutting down some locations, the retailer plans to “rationalize” its inventory levels to create space for new concepts within its stores.

Select locations will feature an expanded stand-alone area for entertainment brand HMV, which began appearing inside the toy stores last year and is also managed by Putman Investments, the owner of Toys “R” Us.

Other stores are set for renovations to include a Wonderlab, a concept that Toys “R” Us Canada has been trying out in Burlington, Ont., featuring an indoor play area along with space for arts and crafts and sensory activities.
