London police are looking into a death that occurred at a micro-shelter site in the southwestern Ontario city on Wednesday.

Emergency services were alerted to the shelter community on Cheese Factory Road near Highway 401 and Highbury Avenue shortly after noon ET regarding an unresponsive person.

“At this time, the death does not appear to be suspicious in nature, and we are working in collaboration with members of the chief coroner’s office,” Sgt. Sandasha Bough of the London Police Service said in a statement.

The name of the individual who passed away has not been disclosed.

This site, which accommodates about 70 individuals, is run by the City of London along with outreach workers and security firm Xpera, and it has been operational since February.

“This afternoon we were advised by the site operator, Xpera, that a resident had passed away in the housing community. We are saddened to hear of the individual’s passing,” said Kevin Dickins, deputy city manager of social and health development for the City of London, in a statement.

“The operator is managing the response and providing supports to other residents that need it. The City is working closely, supporting Xpera.”

Prospective tenants have been referred through the city’s coordinated access system, and those currently residing at the shelter will have access to case management, assistance navigating services, mental health support, addiction help, and transportation as previously mentioned by the city.

Last month, city officials stated that this site serves as a temporary housing solution aimed at helping people transition into permanent homes while gradually adding services such as healthcare, income assistance, and housing support over time.
