London, Ont., has been ranked as the second-best city in Ontario based on a quality-of-life index by a cost-of-living group. This index looked at factors like purchasing power, safety, health care, climate, living costs, property prices, traffic, and pollution.

Deputy Mayor Shawn Lewis mentioned that London’s strong performance across these categories contributed to its impressive ranking.

“When you compare us to other cities in Ontario, even ones nearby like Toronto or Brampton, they have much longer commute times,” Lewis said. “We’re still a city that’s easy to navigate. We offer great health care services, and for me, the cost of living is a major factor.”

Lewis pointed out that while London’s purchasing power is slightly lower than Ottawa’s, Ottawa has more government jobs and higher salaries.

“In London, we enjoy decent purchasing power and a solid cost-of-living index,” he noted. “Here, money stretches further compared to other municipalities.”

However, Lewis acknowledged that safety is an area where the city needs improvement. He highlighted council’s initiative to hire 100 more police officers by the end of this term since the city is currently lacking sufficient staff for its size.

Not everyone agrees with this ranking for London.

Megan Ciufo, executive director of Lifespin, argued that the city shouldn’t hold such a high rank, especially considering what low-income residents face.</

“Our organization supports low-income families, and no, I don’t believe we’re second in Ontario,” Ciufo said. “Recent reports from the health unit show that issues affecting low-income families are only increasing.”</

“Depending on where you live, things may seem quite good,” she observed. “But in other neighborhoods, conditions for those experiencing poverty are deteriorating.”</

data-start=” 1957″ data-end=” 2154″>Ciufo stated that there needs to be better support for low-income residents and those without homes. Data shows there were 2,301 people unhoused as of December 2025, a rise from the previous year.</

“That number is completely unacceptable,” she emphasized. “It indicates we aren’t doing enough for those without homes, especially during a winter like this.”</

data-start=” 2302″ data-end=” 2378″>The quality-of-life index can be found on Numbeo’s cost-of-living website.</
