London is set to take center stage as the host city for two key competitions that will determine which athletes get to represent Canada at major international sporting events.
Athletics Canada announced on Wednesday that London will welcome the 2027 Canadian Track and Field Championships and the 2028 Bell Track and Field Trials, both taking place at Western Alumni Stadium.
This decision comes after a successful bid from Tourism London, in partnership with the London Western Track and Field Club, Western University, and city hall.
The 2027 championships will act as a selection event for Canada’s team heading to the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, while the 2028 trials will help choose competitors for Canada at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
“Tasked with hosting our national outdoor championships, London is an ideal choice to showcase our athletes on their road to World Championships and Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Athletics Canada CEO Mathieu Gentès. “Track & Field has a long, decorated history in the city.”
London’s track background includes stars like Alysha Newman, who won bronze in pole vaulting at the 2024 Olympics, and Damian Warner, who was crowned champion in decathlon at the 2020 Olympics.
The city has plenty of experience hosting large-scale sporting events. In 2024, it hosted both the Canadian Cross Country Championships and the Ontario Summer Games. In 2023, London also held the Tim Horton’s Brier, which is Canada’s national men’s curling championship.
According to Athletics Canada, these championships typically bring together nearly 2,000 athletes, coaches, and officials.
The 2027 Canadian Track and Field Championships are scheduled from August 9 to August 15, while the 2028 Bell Track and Field Trials will take place from June 14 to June 18.
