The second day of a three-day snow event is covering southern Ontario, bringing the heaviest snowfall of the season so far, especially in Waterloo Region.

Strong winds have pushed more than 30 cm of snow in parts of Waterloo Region by 9 a. m., with additional snowfall expected over the next day.

Rob Kuhn from Environment Canada reported that this is a record amount of lake effect snow for the area.

31.0 cm total snow Kitchener Stanley Park as of 9.00 AM. Record highest lake effect snow event here from Lake Huron. Back to shoveling I go. #onstorm #onwx

The weather has forced all school buses, taxis, and special education routes to be canceled for both the Waterloo Region District School Board and Waterloo Catholic District School Board.

A weather alert from Environment Canada was raised to an orange level due to extremely dangerous travel conditions.

This orange alert warns about heavy snowfall rates between 5 to 10 cm per hour and very low visibility because of blowing snow. Winds are expected to gust up to 80 km/h, with changing snowfall amounts as the storm continues.

As of Friday morning, some areas could see between 40 to 70 cm of snow through Saturday morning.

Snow events have been declared across Waterloo Region, including Kitchener, with Waterloo issuing its own notice later in the morning. These events mean no parking on city streets so that snowplows can clear roads effectively.

From Thursday night at 10 p. m. until early Friday morning, hazardous conditions led to all eastbound lanes being closed on Highway 401 through Drumbo.

Traffic callers reaching out to the 570 News Radio newsroom reported complete standstill near Oxford Rd. 29.

One caller mentioned they had been stuck in their vehicle on Highway 401 since Thursday at 11 p. m.

Waterloo regional police have been busy during this latest storm. Since Thursday at 4 p. m., officers responded to reports of 33 collisions; however, many were minor with no injuries noted.
