Several collision investigations were initiated on Thursday afternoon as drivers in the Waterloo Region faced whiteout conditions from blowing snow.
Although there were no local weather alerts, sporadic flurries and strong winds affected visibility on the roads at various times.
In under an hour, Waterloo regional police reported three different collision investigations across local townships.
One incident took place on Line 86 in Wellesley between Chalmers Forest Road and Wellington Road 11. Authorities noted that four vehicles were involved, including two transport trucks, with injuries reported.
A second crash occurred at Cedar Creek Road and Trussler Road in North Dumfries, while a third was logged on Arthur Street South in Elmira near the Listowel Road area.
Then, around 4 p. m., police announced that Fischer-Hallman Road was closed between Wallaceton Way and Huron Road in Kitchener due to another crash.
Listeners tuning into 570 News Radio shared that the afternoon commute was tough on many regional roads as snow whipped by the wind made it hard to see lane markings.
The police shared a message via social media stating, “We are currently responding to an increase in calls for service due to snow and wind conditions across the region. Motorists are reminded to drive with increased caution and remain alert while travelling today. Reduced visibility is expected, particularly in rural areas.”

Wellesley’s snow event has also been extended by another full day and is now set to finish Friday at 11:59 p. m. The City of Cambridge began its snow event at 7 a. m. Thursday and plans to lift it by Saturday noon. Additionally, Wilmot will implement a parking ban starting at midnight Friday. The City of Kitchener ended its snow event as of 5 p. m. on Thursday.Weekend forecast
This winter has already been tough with heavy snowfall, and another significant storm could arrive on Sunday. Rob Kuhn from Environment Canada called into The Mike Farwell Show on Thursday mentioning there’s still some uncertainty about this upcoming system but it might produce between 25 to 30 cm of snowfall. If there’s little or no accumulation on Sunday, strong winds will likely still cause blowing and drifting snow. This weekend also looks like it’ll bring in the coldest air we’ve seen this season.Source link
