Two individuals suffered non-life-threatening injuries after a vehicle drove off the Highway 427 overpass, landing on Highway 401 and colliding with a tractor-trailer.

Ontario Provincial Police indicate that snow and excessive speed might have contributed to the incident, which was recorded on video, when a vehicle unexpectedly flew off a Highway 427 overpass and crashed into oncoming traffic on Highway 401.

The event took place on Feb. 1 at around 6:55 p. m., according to a news release from police.

The vehicle was heading south on the 427 when the driver hit the right side of the overpass leading to the 401.

“The vehicle ramped up and over the concrete barrier and upon landing, collided with a transport truck on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 before finally coming to rest upside down near the Eglinton Avenue exit,” stated the OPP in their news release.

Two people were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Dashcam footage shared on social media shows a car flying off the overpass and crashing into the trailer of an adjacent transport truck. In this clip, another truck following closely behind gets suddenly covered in debris as its driver slams on brakes.

Four Similar Crashes Since Major Snowstorm

This Sunday crash is one of four comparable incidents reported since Toronto and nearby areas experienced an unprecedented snowfall of 60 centimeters on Jan. 25.

On Jan. 30, authorities said that a car lost control while exiting from QEW onto Highway 420 in Niagara Falls, hitting snow piled up along the shoulder. This caused it to go over the guardrail and come to rest among trees and bushes, preventing it from rolling down onto QEW below. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

Just a day after last month’s heavy snowfall, two drivers drove off from the Highway 8 flyover in Kitchener, Ont., within hours of each other. One driver lost their life in that incident.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt mentioned then that snow removal operations at that ramp might have been a contributing factor.

“Plows are coming through, clearing highways by pushing snow off to one side,” Schmidt explained. “In this situation, they can’t push it over into traffic below because it would fall onto that highway.”
