Waterloo regional police report that one individual has been taken into custody following a weapons-related call, which led to several Kitchener schools entering hold and secure status.
This occurred late Wednesday morning when police announced around 11 a. m. that Forest Heights Collegiate Institute (FHCI) was put in a hold and secure as a precautionary measure.
The situation arose from a weapons-related call in the Fischer-Hallman and Queen’s Boulevard area.
A message on FHCI’s website indicated that students continued their classes during the hold and secure, “As the concern is outside of the school building, and many routines remain in place.”
At 11:12 a. m., police shared on social media that several other schools were also placed in hold and secures, including Westheights, Southridge, and Meadowlane public schools. St. Mark Catholic Elementary School and St. Paul Catholic Elementary School were affected as well.
Just five minutes later, police confirmed that all of the hold and secures had been lifted.
They stated that one person was taken into custody and assured there are no ongoing public safety issues.
Police informed 570 News Radio that their investigation began shortly before 10:30 a. m., when they received reports about an individual in distress who had a knife.
They said local schools were instructed to enter hold and secures as a safety measure until the individual could be safely located.
