The federal government has teamed up with CMHC to create standardized home designs for Canada, aiming to cut through some of the red tape in the development process and expedite construction.
The Housing Design Catalogue features plans for single homes, duplexes, detached houses, and more, tailored specifically for the diverse biomes and provinces across Canada.

This catalogue was developed with input from architects, designers, municipal and provincial governments, Indigenous groups, and housing market experts.
According to CMHC, these designs take local building codes into account so that they can be nearly pre-approved in the future.
This isn’t CMHC’s first attempt at creating a design catalogue. After World War II, catalogues were over a span of thirty years to address Canada’s housing shortage back then. These new designs aim to tackle today’s issues related to affordability and supply.

“Canada’s new government is stepping up with a bold new approach to increase the supply of housing in Canada, and with today’s release of the Housing Design Catalogue’s full technical designs, we are taking another important step to empower local builders to get shovels in the ground,” said Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, who was present in Kitchener for Wednesday’s announcement.
Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic also attended Wednesday’s event and mentioned that initially city staff might need some time to review these designs before giving approvals.
“This is a catalogue that has been developed nationally, and our team in planning and building have been working on all of these. So obviously as the first ones come through, it will take a little bit of tweaking but the team is ready to get these built quickly and efficiently,” said Vrbanovic.
Vrbanovic noted that how well this catalogue works depends on developers and their building schedules. There’s no specific funding linked to this project.
