On Friday, Feb. 20, 2026, Kingston and the Islands MPP Ted Hsu visited the team at the YMCA of Eastern Ontario to celebrate a $29,800 seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), which helped launch a new karate program at the Kingston YMCA.
This funding has made it easier for children and youth to access inclusive physical activities that build skills while boosting confidence, discipline, and overall well-being. It also aims to lower barriers to participation. The local YMCA noted that the grant was used for initial costs like equipment and resources needed for safely running the karate program. According to their release, this new offering enhances the YMCA’s ability to provide varied and accessible recreation options tailored to community needs.
<p“The karate program at the Kingston YMCA was launched in response to strong community interest in structured, skill-based physical activity for children and youth,” said YMCA CEO Rob Adams.
<p“[With] its early success, the YMCA of Eastern Ontario is proud to continue offering this program, deepening its impact by creating opportunities that build confidence, foster connection, and support lifelong skills.”
